Flying With Cannabis: What Are The Rules At Paine Field In Everett?
Since I first started consuming cannabis back in 2010, I’ve flown on an airplane with cartridges and flower almost ten times. Doing so always caused me great anxiety but I absolutely refused to go without my meds in case of a kidney stone attack. I always detach my vape carts and send them via the checked bags, making sure that everything wasn’t labeled or easily identified as cannabis.
Flying out of Seattle Tacoma International Airport for the majority of my life, traveling with cannabis has always been illegal. With the exception of LAX announcing that passengers could travel with legal marijuana, airports are still not allowing cannabis. They report to the federal government which still has cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug next to heroin and methamphetamines. Even though more than 10 states have legalized, there are still many rules surrounding cannabis, especially when it comes to airports.
Now that Paine Field has opened and actively been transporting people from Everett, it’s important to get a better understanding of their rules for cannabis. In short, it’s not allowed or recommended to travel with cannabis. In states like Washington, TSA has generally been instructed to look for other drugs and weapons however cannabis products are still not federally legal. Since airplanes and terminals are federal areas, cannabis is not allowed unless that specific airport has announced different rules. In this case, Paine Field is sticking to their guns and following suit with the overwhelming majority of other airports.
Currently Los Angeles’ LAX is the only airport to have clearly communicated their rules and expectations when it comes to cannabis. You might make it on the plane with your goodies at LAX, but there’s no guarantee that you won’t have law enforcement waiting for you when you land.
“The federal government still criminalizes marijuana use in the United States. Any amount, for a first-time offender, is a federal misdemeanor with penalties ranging from six months to a year in jail, a $1,000 fine or a combination of jail and fines. Second or subsequent offenses, sale and cultivation increase those penalties significantly. State governments may only regulate laws within their borders, so crossing into federal lands (think: national parks), or taking a federal mode of transport will subject you to federal laws.” - The Points Guy
People have been traveling all over the world with cannabis for years and years. If you’re going to take the risk, at least know the rules and do your best to transport the products in a way that is more safe and discreet than packing it in your carry-on or purse.
For traveling, we always recommend vapes, edibles, beverages, topicals, and other non-traditional froms of cannabis. Flower has the most notable smell and is easier to identify which usually puts travelers in a sticky situation. At Local Roots, we don’t encourage anyone to break the law, but if you do need cannabis for your next trip, make sure to check out our Live Menu to stay in the loop for new products and other updates.
